One of the excellences of the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and in particular of the province of Udine, is undoubtedly the town of Aquileia, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
The importance of Aquileia is due to its historical role: a military colony founded by the Romans in the second century B.C. It became then one of the major cities of the Roman Empire and an important river port.
With the coming of Christianity, it became a great centre for ecclesiastical organization and a patriarchate see.
As evidence of its splendour during the Roman era, Aquileia still owns a vast archaeological site, where it is possible to admire many artefacts, including the ruins of the forum, the burial ground, the river port and some houses.
As evidence of the important religious role played at the beginning of the Christianity era, it is also possible to admire the remains of an early Christian Basilica, unique example of religious architecture dating back to the fifth and the sixth century. The beautiful mosaics that decorated the structure are now visible in the Early Christian Museum in Aquileia.
